iThis is a good read and in depicting the trials and tribulations of a family of settlers fairly accurately (?apart from some of the place names?)portrays some of the New Zealand history of the 1860s. While reflecting the "white superiority"; attitude of the English at the time it also gives the Moari due credit for being a clever, brave, and resourceful people. At "paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=AS19120608.2.106" is a facsinating account of Te Kooti's background and the injustice which caused him to rebel.Product details

Maori and Settler A Story of The New Zealand War eBook G A George Alfred Henty Alfred Pearse Reviews
This was an interesting and well written story of early New Zealand. It was quite old-fashioned, but still moved along nicely. I enjoyed it.
this book has given me a great insight in the "New Zealand Indians". I had no idea what the Maori people were like and since we are going to New Zealand in October I wanted to learn some of the history. fascinating read!
This had a good story but so much of it was about the conflict, war, and such that it probably would be of more interest to male readers. I enjoyed the characters and the main plot other than that, however.
This book is written in a more flowery manner than we see today People address each other in a more formal and genteel manner. That said it is filled with adventure and interesting historical events in times past on the seas and in the land of the long white cloud. I liked it.
As a 3rd generation Kiwi from Yorkshire stock, this book really gave me a sense of the 1860's. The relationship between the early settlers and Maori is explained in a sensible way that differs from some of the revisionist history fed to us. Many Maori fought with the settlers against those Maori who wanted to murder and rid NZ of the colonialists. Always interesting, reads like a thriller!
The book interested me because my family to moved form England to New Zealand in 1960.I now live in Canada. You will get a feel for what a family reasons are for settling in New Zealand and there voyage to get there,by sailing ship. The Maori are wonderful people, however just like a lot early colonists, we may have taken advantage of them in payment of the lands. This leads into the part of the book with the Maori uprising, and battles with settlers, in the North Island. Not all the Maori tubes joined in so there was Maori fighting Maori along side early settlers. A good read and a good introduction on this part of New Zealand's history. While the characters may not be real the events names of the military men and regiments are. I lived in the area where these events happened and I'd wonderful bush country. Suggest you take a trip there
I found the narrative of the settling of New Zealand by people from Britain very compelling reading but after visiting New Zealand and speaking to one of our guides, I concluded that the story was probably rather one-sided. It describes the settlers as heroes inhabiting a beautiful but untamed land and a large segment the Maori natives as savage killers with few redeaming qualities. However, teh Maori's likely had legitimate grievances about how they were pushed off their native lands by the settlers which the book does not dela with
